Migrating to Ubuntu 8.10

I've been working on installing Ubuntu 8.10 as a dual boot on my Dell Inspiron 6400 PC, Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB of RAM.  So far things are working well.  If you are interested in Trying out Ubuntu I'd recommend downloading a Virtual Machine of it first to get a feel for it.  The main reason why I decided to go into Dual boot on my PC is I wanted to confirm that the hardware would be compatible, specifically my wireless, as virtual machines use the PC's connection to fake a LAN.  So it doesn't give you a full sense of compatibility.  Here were some of the hurdles I've had and how I overcame them:

Panels disappear after upgrade/reboot

After install I ran the apt-get update and it downloaded some upgrades that cause my panels to disappear.  This obviously made it hard to navigate around.  I found out that somehow gnome-panel was removed.  So I installed gnome-panel (apt-get install gnome-panel) and added it to the Services so that on startup it would load.

Wireless Detection

After initial install my wireless took a while to get configured.  This is actually very easy for Broadcom cards.  Here is what you do: go to System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers and activate the driver for the Broadcom.  This allowed me to activate my wireless right away

Windows program compatibility

I created a list of programs on my computer before the upgrade so that I knew what I needed to port over and what I need to work with.   All in all it worked fairly well.  I'm still going through and installing, but make sure you download Wine as that will help fill in the gaps for applications that don't support Linux natively.

Sound

One thing that actually surprised me was how the sound setup was a little bit of a run around.  The biggest reason was I was trying to get my logitech headset to work.  Don't even bother with it.  If you have a logitech headset, just go out and buy a cheap $10 headset that has the Headphone and Mic lines.  This will save a lot of time anf frustration.  Also make sure you have consistency with your sound settings otherwise you may encounter issues with programs like Skype.

Outstanding issues

It isn't a huge issue, but I'm try to figure out how to speed up my boot.  Currently it hangs at "Activating Swapfile Swap" for a couple of minutes.  I saw some notes about changing the swapfile name along with removing the swap altogether.  It is a couple of min on boot and that is it.  Otherwise it moves really quick.
